The bed bug: the nightmare of your nights
The bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is a global pest affecting homes as well as hotels, hospitals and apartment buildings. Montreal has been among Canada's most affected cities for over a decade. Small (about 5 mm), reddish-brown, shaped like an apple seed or lentil, it feeds exclusively on human blood, at night, while you sleep.
What makes it so formidable: it hides extremely well, reproduces quickly and spreads easily from room — or unit — to another. Without professional treatment, an infestation doesn't disappear on its own: it gets worse.
Life cycle and reproduction
- Lifespan: 4 months to 1 year.
- A female lays 200 to 500 eggs over her life depending on food access.
- Eggs (~1 mm, whitish) hatch in 1 to 2 weeks.
- Crucial fact: a bed bug can survive several months without feeding (often 5 months or more). That's why "waiting them out" or leaving a room unoccupied doesn't work.

How do they spread?
Bed bugs don't jump or fly: they move by clinging. They mainly travel via:
- Luggage and clothing after a hotel stay, travel or visiting someone

- Bags, backpacks, public transit seats

The bed bug transmits no known disease, but its impact is very real:

Signs of an infestation
