Seeing cockroaches at home?
These signs come up in nearly every home we treat:
- Cockroaches scattering when you turn on the light at night
- Activity around the kitchen, the sink or the bathroom
- Small cockroaches in cabinets or drawers
- Black specks like ground pepper in corners and cupboards
- Insects near the fridge, stove or dishwasher
- Activity that keeps coming back despite store-bought products
The earlier an infestation is caught, the fewer established harbourages there are — and the simpler it generally is to limit its spread, especially in a rental building.
How our intervention works
A targeted method, matched to the species and the building — not a blanket spray.
Inspection
We locate activity zones, harbourages and what feeds the infestation: moisture, food sources, migration points between units.
Targeted treatment
Professional gel bait in the harbourages plus treatment of cracks and sensitive areas, based on the species and the scale of the infestation. No blanket spraying, which scatters the colony.
Recommendations
Clear instructions to cut off access to food, water and shelter — that's what keeps the population from rebuilding.
Follow-up if needed
Eggs (oothecae) resist products: a second visit is often planned to catch newly hatched roaches. Follow-up is adjusted to your situation.

WHY CHOOSE US
Why choose 514 Extermination for your cockroaches?
Spraying scatters the colony into wall voids and brings it back stronger. We work with gel bait, which also reaches the individuals that never leave their harbourage.
Gel bait, not spray
Spray acts as a repellent: it scatters the colony. Gel bait is carried back to the nest and eliminates, by domino effect, the ones you never see.
A product in the cracks too
We don't stop at bait. A targeted product is also applied in cracks and sensitive areas, where spraying never reaches — to get the cockroaches that never leave their harbourage.
We identify the species first
German, American or Oriental cockroach: they don't live in the same places and aren't treated the same way. Identification changes the whole protocol.
We find the source, not the survivors
Under the sink, behind the dishwasher, near the floor drain, in the basement kitchen. What you see upstairs is almost never the focal point.
Safe for children and pets
The gel is applied in cracks and behind appliances, out of reach. Health Canada approved products, applied by a CD5-certified technician.
Follow-up + guarantee
The egg cycle (ootheca) often requires a second visit: follow-up is included. The written guarantee states the coverage period — if cockroaches return during that time, we come back at no charge.

The German cockroach: the most stubborn
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is by far the most common roach in Montreal apartments, restaurants and buildings. Small (1 to 1.5 cm), pale brown with two dark stripes on the thorax, it's nocturnal and hides by day in warm damp cracks, near food and water sources.
It's one of the hardest pests to eliminate yourself: it breeds extremely fast, develops resistance to over-the-counter insecticides and slips into the tiniest crevices.
Lightning-fast reproduction
- A female carries an ootheca (egg capsule) containing 30 to 40 eggs.
- She can produce several oothecae over her life — meaning hundreds of offspring.
- The egg → adult cycle takes only a few weeks in a warm environment.
As a result, a few spotted roaches can become a major infestation in 2-3 months. Seeing a roach during the day often signals an already large population.
How do they spread?
Cockroaches travel and migrate easily:
- Through shared plumbing risers in buildings — from unit to unit, vertically
- Via cardboard boxes, grocery bags, used appliances and deliveries
- Through cracks, baseboards and conduits
In a building or condo, effective treatment often requires a coordinated approach between units — see our guide for boards and managers and our commercial services (restaurants, buildings).
Health risks
Cockroaches are a real health concern. They contaminate food and surfaces with their droppings and can transmit salmonella, E. coli and other bacteria. Above all, their droppings, molts and saliva are powerful allergens: they're associated with asthma and allergy attacks, especially in children. In a food business, their presence is a MAPAQ non-compliance risk.
Where do they hide?
- Behind and under appliances (stove, fridge, dishwasher, microwave)
- In cabinet cracks, hinges and counter corners
- Around the sink, plumbing and water points
- In the warm motors of electronics
- Under baseboards and behind peeling wallpaper
Their preference for warm, inaccessible nooks is why surface sprays fail.
Signs of an infestation
- Small black droppings (like ground pepper) in cabinets, drawers and counter corners
- Roaches seen during the day — a sign of an already large population
- Greasy, unpleasant odor when the infestation is advanced
- Oothecae (brown egg capsules) stuck in crevices
- Molts and shed skins near hiding spots
How to prevent an infestation
The German cockroach loves warmth, moisture and crumbs. To reduce the risk:
- Deep-clean the kitchen: behind and under appliances, crumbs, grease.
- Store food in airtight containers and don't leave dirty dishes overnight.
- Fix leaks and dry water points (sink, plumbing).
- Seal cracks around baseboards, cabinets and conduits.
- Inspect boxes, bags and used appliances before bringing them in.
In a building, one unit's hygiene isn't enough: roaches migrate through plumbing. Coordinated treatment is often necessary.
