How to identify
Large rodent with brown-grey fur, blunt snout, small ears and a thick tail shorter than its body.
Typical habitat
Basements, sewers, outdoor burrows. Prefers lower levels and damp areas.
Health risks
Rats transmit many serious diseases: leptospirosis, salmonellosis, rat-bite fever. They damage structures, gnaw through pipes and electrical wires, and contaminate large amounts of food.
