Health risks

Major fire risk from their chewing of electrical wires. They can transmit leptospirosis and host fleas and ticks.

Signs of infestation

  • Running noises in the attic morning and late afternoon
  • Gnaw marks on roof edges
  • Small oval droppings (8 to 12 mm) in the attic
  • Nest materials (leaves, branches) piled in corners
  • Roughly 5 cm holes in soffits or shingles

Prevention tips

  • Inspect and repair soffits and roof edges every fall
  • Trim trees to at least 2 m from the roof
  • Install metal screens on vents
  • Block access to bird feeders near the house
  • Do not leave nuts or seeds accessible
